In late 2025, a ransomware attack on South Africa’s National Health Laboratory Service disrupted blood test processing nationwide, delaying critical care for millions of people.
M-Tiba, a Kenyan digital health platform backed by Safaricom, suffered a significant cyberattack in late 2025. Nigeria’s private healthcare sector is now described as one of the most targeted on the African continent, with attacks increasing at an alarming rate and most incidents go unreported because hospitals rarely disclose them publicly.
The core problem is structural. African hospitals run on legacy systems, fragmented infrastructure, and underfunded IT teams. Patient records when digital at all sit in unencrypted databases scattered across multiple systems.
But here is the deeper problem that nobody addresses: even if you encrypt patient records, a researcher who wants to ask “how many patients on Drug X had cardiac events?” still has to decrypt the entire dataset to run that query. For one second, every single record is exposed.
Zama’s FHE Fully Homomorphic Encryption is the only technology that changes this. A researcher can now ask that question and receive only the number, while every individual record stays mathematically sealed. No decryption. No exposure. Not for one second.
We built MediFlow to demonstrate exactly this on a live blockchain.
